An ambitious plan by the Fredrick the Great, the building of the New Palace of Sanssouci is to celebrate Prussia’s success at the end of the Seven Years War in 1763. The palace is located in the Sanssouci Royal Park in Potsdam, Germany, and is regarded as the last great Prussian baroque palace. With grand ballrooms, profound galleries, lavishly furnished apartments and a baroque palace theater the guests from the German and European aristocracy could celebrate in style. Being a king, a connoisseur, and an enthusiast of decorative natural stones, Fredrick the Great had autonomous right to all precious stones. Travelling all the way to Silesia, King Fredrick personally picked the green serpentine that are used to decorate the New Palace of Sanssouci. The Graf von Faber- Castell Pen of the Year 2015, Sanssouci Potsdam Pen of the Year, was inspired by the architectural design of the New Palace of Sanssouci. The “masterpiece” was placed in the hands of a skilled master as the creation required the highest level of craftsmanship. The Herbert Stephen gemstone manufactory was singled out to take on the task. Since the 15th century to date, the manufactory still carries on great tradition of the Idar Oberstein gemstone workshops. The masters have lived up to their names by showing great competencies through the assembling of the pens. The barrel of the Special Edition has a different composition compared to the platinum plated as it has a combination of 24K gold plating with green serpentine. Engravings of the baroque period are adorned on the pen with the cap crowned with a rare rysoprase, King Fredrick’s favourite natural stone. All the precious stones used were carefully grounded and hand-polished. The fountain pen adopts the plunger mechanism and has an 18K, bi-colour gold nib. Limited to only 150 pieces, each individually numbered, the fountain pen is presented with a polished, deep-black wooden case, a brochure and a certificate signed by the master craftsman- indicating the authenticity of the natural stones. The wooden case is a big bonus for collectors as there is a second insert which has a room that can contain another six writing instruments.
