A symbol of culture in Japan, this fan which is made from paper and bamboo is used not only to create a cooling breeze rather the "canvas" for intensive design. This motif has been used here in conjunction with water as part of a story. The design represents the "Three Boats" ceremony, which takes place annually on the outskirts of Kyoto. The ceremony involves costumed Japanese ladies throwing fans into the stream and watching them float away, a scene that recalls the Emperor and his court on the Oi river during the Heian period (794-1185). It celebrates music, poetry and beautiful spectacle. This specially commissioned pen is handcrafted in traditional Japanese maki-e by Mr. Kosen Oshita.
